1. What is The Libby Ross Breast Cancer Foundation?
The Foundation is a New York-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a focus on outreach to those afflicted with breast cancer and awareness among all. We view the fight against breast cancer as a three-pronged attack: (1) Foster a community of support and strength for the afflicted, (2) research for a cure, and (3) provide outreach to promote awareness, early detection, and prevention.
2. Why did you start the Foundation?
The Libby Ross Foundation was founded in loving memory of Elizabeth "Libby" Ross. Both of the founders have had first hand experience with breast cancer in their families. The Foundation was created to prevent other women and their families from experiencing the devastation of breast cancer.
3. What is the mission of the Foundation?
The Libby Ross Foundation's mission is to make a significant difference in the lives of women afflicted with breast cancer through unique support programs and to help eradicate the disease through research and early detection.
4. What medical organizations have you supported?
To date, we have supported the Palmetto Health South Carolina Comprehensive Breast Center and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to support research and treatment. We provide support and outreach through the LRBCF Pink Ribbon Kit Program to the Comprehensive Breast Center at St. Luke's Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center New York-Presbyterian Hospital and their Women at Risk (WAR) program.
5. Who are your target audiences?
The Foundation targets two major groups: (1) breast cancer survivors who we support through grassroots outreach initiatives and yoga programs, and (2) young women and men in need of education about the affects of breast cancer and the benefits for early detection
6. What is the long-term goal of the Foundation?
The Libby Ross Foundation is working toward becoming a national breast cancer advocate. We see the Foundation providing support and awareness through our unique programs, grants, media, and fun-raisers. In 2009 we expanded our yoga program to South Carolina and California, and we hope to continue this expansion nationwide in the coming years.
7. How has the Foundation helped breast cancer survivors?
The Foundation provides support to survivors through our Pink Ribbon Kit Program and the Pose for Pink Yoga Program. The Pink Ribbon Kit is distributed to women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. The yoga program provides a sense of well-being and comfort to women who have undergone surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation through weekly yoga classes, quarterly yoga workshops, and three-day yoga retreats. Both programs facilitate a supportive community of women who have faced the battle with cancer. We estimate that in our first 10 years, we have reached more than 10,000 women. Additionally, our Pose for Pink Yoga Program also embraces the community affected by other women's cancers.
9. What is the Foundation doing to promote prevention and early detection?
The Foundation has given significant funding to the Palmetto Health Breast Center in Columbia, SC, where funds are earmarked toward research and early detection of breast cancer. With the Foundation's yearly donations, the Palmetto Health Breast Center was built a dedicated Mammography screening room that provides equipment and staff to patients, furthering efforts to detect the disease in its early stages. In addition, the Foundation funds initiatives through the Breast Cancer Research Foundation with funds earmarked for specific research projects.
